A Brief Guidance to Pipe and Drape
If you're unfamiliar with pipe and drape, you might be thinking that it's difficult to understand...but it's really quite easy! This guide will walk you through pipe and drape components and set-ups.
First, let's get a basic understanding of the pieces involved in pipe and drape. There are only 4 components parts to a pipe and drape backdrop:
1) Uprights - the aluminum vertical pipe the sets the height of your display.
2) Bases - the steel plate that goes underneath each upright to provide overall stability and support.
3) Drape Support Rod - the adjustable horizontal pipe that sets with of your display and from which the drapes are hung.
4) Drape Panels - the fabric that hangs from the drape support rod and completes the look of your backdrop.
Now that you know the four components of pipe and drape (uprights, bases, drape support rods, and fabric drape panels), we can examine some of the ways that pipe and drape works together to form some great room dividers, backdrops, and booths!
It's simple to use our pipe & drape to form a wide variety of set-ups!
The first thing to look at is the height that you'll need. We have many upright sizes that determine the overall height of your display, so knowing your height requirement is very useful. (Tip: make sure it will clear the ceiling height! If you order an 8 foot tall upright and the ceiling is only 7 feet 10 inches high, your uprights won't work in that space.)
Now we measure the width of the area that you need to cover. To figure out the number of pieces that you'll need, you want to have a solid idea of the width that you are covering with pipe and drape.
The easiest configuration that you can build is a linear (in-line) backdrop.
Let's say you have a wall (or part of a wall) that you're trying to cover. You would need to measure the height and the width (left to right) of the area that you're trying to cover.
The pieces used for this backdrop are: 2 uprights, 2 bases, 1 drape support rod, and the drape (the amount of panels depends on the fabric that you prefer).
Our widest drape support rod adjusts to 14 feet wide, but what if you're covering a space wider than 14 feet? It's very easy to extend the coverage of your pipe and drape!
-All of our uprights have 4 slots cut-out near the top, spaced at 90 degree angles.
-Our drape support rods feature hooks at each end that simply hook in to one of the slot cut-outs in the upright.
-Using these drape support rod hooks and the 90 degree angle slots at the top of each upright, you can continue your pipe & drape coverage.
*You can repeat this process until you've covered the total area.
The 90° cut-out slots in the uprights makes it possible to do many other pipe and drape set-ups.
We have our linear backdrop, shown above. But now we want a middle dividing section to separate the display down the middle. No problem! Let's make a "T" configuration...
Using the center upright on the back portion, hook another drape support rod in to the front-facing slot.
After adding our drape panels, we now have a split ("T") partition. Now the back wall and the middle of the room are covered!
This set-up would use 4 uprights, 4 bases, 3 drape support rods, and drapes.
There are multiple ways to readjust this configuration. For example, each of the uprights at the ends of the back wall could have sections that come out "toward" you (just like the center section). This display could also be continued indefinitely. The back wall could be wider, or the center dividing section could continue further into the room, or both. If you were to take away the right end portion of the back wall, you would be left with a "L" shape, having a portion going along the back wall, then turning at a right angle to continue covering the side wall. There are simply basic examples of the MANY ways to configure your display.
Making a booth is easy, too!
Our customers make booths for many purposes; some of the more popular booth uses are portable pipe and drape photo booths, voting booths, private dressing rooms, and pipe & drape trade show booths. To start, let's look at setting up a booth that is all the same height, such as a photo booth, voting booth, or changing station.
To create a "boxed" (enclosed) booth like the one above, you would need 4 uprights, 4 bases, 4 drape support rods, and drape on all sides.
Pipe and drape trade show booths are also easy to make, using a similar set-up to the one above. However, with a trade show booth, you would want one of the sides to serve as an opening for visitors, and you would use a "U"-shaped set-up like this:
The only thing that differs from the pipe and drape photo booth / changing room set-up is that this set-up does not have a "front" drape support rod or drapes. To do this, you would need 4 uprights, 4 bases, 3 drape support rods, and drape panels to go on the back and two sides.
Remember, the width of each side can vary based on the drape support rod that you choose. Any or all sides can be as narrow as 6 feet, or as wide as 14 feet, depending on the drape support rods used.
Based on the venue and/or personal preference, you may need to have the sides (side walls) of the trade show booth at a shorter height than the back of the booth (the back wall). This is the reason that our fixed and break apart uprights have slots cut-out at other heights as well, not just at the top. Our 8 foot fixed upright, for example, has four 90° slots cut out at 3 feet high, and again at the top of the upright. This allows a drape support rod to be hooked in at a lower height as well, not just at the top of the upright, making the trade show booth have a back wall at one height and the side walls at a shorter height.
Utilizing the lower slot cut-outs in the uprights, you can easily make a pipe and drape trade show booth. Shown below is a booth with an 8 foot high back wall and 3 foot high sides walls (often the standard size of most booths at convention centers). The back wall portion can be adjusted in width (such as 6 to 10 feet wide) and the side walls can "come out" toward you at an adjustable space.
The pieces necessary to make this style of a pipe & drape trade show booth would be 2 taller uprights (in this example they are 8 feet tall), 2 bases appropriate for those uprights (here, it would be the 16"x14" 10 lb. base), taller drape panels for the back (our example uses 8 foot panels), 3 drape support rods (one to go across on the back wall, and one on each side wall), 2 shorter uprights (in our example they are 3 feet tall), 2 bases appropriate for those uprights (here, it would be the 8"x14" 6 lb. base), and the shorter drapes for the side walls (our example uses 3 foot tall drape panels).
Helpful Tips to Keep in Mind:
1) Every upright needs a base underneath it. Unless you already have some pipe and drape hardware, you should always have the same amount of bases as you do uprights.
2) Each end of the drape support rod needs an upright to hold it up. Otherwise, it wouldn't be supported at each hook.
3) The amount of drape panels you need depends on the fabric, as our various fabrics have different panel widths.
4) Remember that pipe and drape is intended to be a temporary display, not a permanent structure; it is not bolted to a wall or the floor. Never use it in an unsafe manner.
5) The examples shown in this guide are only a few of the ways that pipe and drape set-ups can be constructed. Use your imagination, and the possibilities are endless!
